Aggressive Renovation Project Transforms 50 Year Old Building into the New Hub of Activity at WSU

In April of 2009, WPI finished up their 24 months of work as part of a complete renovation of the aging Compton Union Building (CUB) on the campus of Washington State University in Pullman, Washington. The goal of this $86 million renovation project was to turn the six story, 50 year old student union building into a vibrant, eco-friendly, multi-use destination that students would want to use. The university achieved this goal by demolishing and rebuilding most interior spaces. In the process they brought in better food venues, a modern lounge space, more natural light, new meeting spaces, and a newly remodeled, high-tech 489-seat auditorium.

WPI played an important role in the transformation of this building. WPI's scope of work on this project included metal stud framing, insulation, vapor retarders, fireproofing, rough carpentry, metal door frames, veneer plaster, gypsum board, acoustical & metal ceilings, acoustical & wood wall treatments, and other miscellaneous specialties.

The result is a gorgeous student union building that truly has become the eco-friendly hub of student activities and services at WSU. For the environmentally responsible equipment, materials and construction practices used during construction, the WSU Compton Union Building was the first building on campus to earn the prestigious Silver Level Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) certification from the United States Green Building Council. The WPI employees are proud to have played a pivotal role in this high quality renovation project.
