The Lane Building
Portland, Oregon

WPI Collaborates with JE Dunn Construction Company to Give an Historic Portland Structure a New Lease on Life

In 1929, business partners Alan Lane Sr. and Miles Standish pioneered a new concept of housing printing company offices and printing presses all in one building, close and convenient to their customers. To this end, they built the LMS Print House on NW 19th Avenue in the outskirts of downtown Portland. In February of 1929, the Oregonian carried an article announcing that the LMS Print House was to be “the most modern of its kind” and would cost approximately $25,000 to build. The Lane Miles-Standish Company operated a successful printing business at this location until operations concluded in 2005.

In 2008, WPI finished up their work with JE Dunn Construction, the general contractor in charge of a complete remodel of the building. The old printing and office areas have been transformed into high end office space. While the printing presses are gone, the unique architecture of this landmark building, including the distinctive hexagon tower at the southwest corner remain.

WPI's scope of work on this project included refurbishing and remodeling the LMS Print House. Work also included the addition of the new six story mixed use residential building, designed and finished to complement the stately original. WPI installed 20,000 square feet of liquid applied air/water barrier, Portland Cement Plaster, and an acrylic finish over the exterior of the new building, which is built with insulated concrete form blocks. Additional details include foam cornice accents at the roofline, wall break accents, and simulated stone pieces at the entries and sills.
