WPI Helps to Create One of the Most Earth-Friendly Large-Scale Health and Bioscience Buildings in the World

Completed in August of 2006, WPI is proud to have played an integral part in the construction of the 16-story, 412,000 square foot Center for Health & Healing at OHSU South Waterfront Campus. Designed by GBD Architects Inc., the Center for Health & Healing is one of the most earth-friendly buildings ever built in the nation and quite possibly the greenest large-scale health and bioscience building ever constructed.

In February of 2007, the Center became the first large medical and research facility in the United States to have earned LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum Certification, the highest attainable, from the U.S. Green Building Council.

The building’s impressive list of sustainability features include an onsite wastewater treatment plant which keeps 15,000 gallons of wastewater a day from reaching the city’s overburdened sewer system. Additional sustainability features include sunshades on the southern facade which double as solar electricity generators. The combined energy savings of the various sustainability features make this building sixty-one percent more energy efficient than required by Oregon code.

The scope of work for WPI on this project included structural and light-gauge framing, drywall, plastering, acoustical ceiling installation, along with wood ceiling and fascia installation. WPI is proud of the role it played in helping to create one of the most environmentally friendly buildings in the world.
